Stability First, Freedom Next: Balancing on One Leg
SUN MAR 22, 10 AM - 12 PM EDT (SUN MAR 22, 10 AM - 12 PM EDT)

Walking on two legs comes naturally to us, but balancing on one requires us to look inward, trust our own abilities, and have faith in ourselves. The will to simply achieve the balance and not fall over can overpower the experience of any given asana and we find ourselves inadvertently creating less stability (sthira) and less ease (sukha). Initiated by fear (of losing our balance), the effort to hang on triggers the "fight or flight" response in our sympathetic nervous system and an asana performed with steadiness, ease, and a "benevolence of spirit" eludes us.

Come and learn the necessary tools for stabilizing the earth bound foot, leg, and hip in the one-legged poses that challenge us. The stability created helps us learn how to then extend, bend, and revolve the trunk while maintaining balance and harmony - all while standing on one leg. As we progress from simpler poses to more complex, we will first incorporate the use of support to integrate how the "prop" educates us to feel confidence and grace to come in and out of these challenging, yet freeing family of asanas.

This class is open to students with at least one year of Iyengar Yoga experience.
