Introduction to Pranayama

As the 4th limb of ashtanga yoga, pranayama is vital to yoga practice. Pranayama means to expand, extend, and regulate the breath. Pranayama calms the nervous system, increases vitality, and prepares the mind for meditation.

This class will include a discussion of the philosophy and theory of pranayama as well as an exploration of asanas that prepare for pranayama. We will practice several pranayama setups for both supine and seated pranayama. Props such as bolsters, blankets, and chairs will support your practice, allowing you to focus on the subtle movements of the breath without strain.

We'll begin with simple awareness techniques and progress through classical practices including ujjayi (victorious breath) and viloma (interrupted breath).

This class is suitable for students with some yoga experience.

Discover how conscious breathing can transform both your yoga practice and daily life.

(W)ring in the New Year: Hybrid Class with Nicky Fonte
As you probably already imagined from the title, this class will focus on the twisting family of poses, Parivrtta Sthiti, in Sanskrit. These poses (when done mindfully) have a rejuvenating effect on the body and mind. They feel great on the tired muscles of the back, induce mobility in the spine, and have a wringing effect on the inner organs.

In this class we will target a variety of standing, seated, and even reclining twists. Inversions will also be the taught and practiced. Prashant Iyengar says “twist the body to untwist your mind”!

Come and experience the powerful yet refreshing effects that these poses offer. The practice will end with restorative poses with time to observe the body, breath and mind after the twists. Welcome in the new year with a heightened sense of clarity and release!

Modifications will be shown as necessary, as well as alternatives offered for those not inverting. All Levels.

Focused Care: Neck and Shoulders

Part II: Neck & Shoulders Series

Got tech neck? Brain fog? Did you know that forward head position due to work environment and mental concentration can contribute to increasing the load of stress on the neck and shoulder?

When the head is properly aligned, the weight of the head is properly distributed on the cervical spine. Slumped posture can negatively affect walking, balance, can lead to restricted breathing, and a decline in memory. Forward head position can also reduce the rate at which a person can perform mental tasks involving physical movement such as writing or typing and their reaction speed to sensory stimuli.

This class series will focus on practical methods for reducing tension, alleviating stiffness, and minimizing the effects of stress in the neck and shoulders.

January 3, January 10, January 17, January 24

Saturdays 9:30 am - 11:30 am

The first 4 students who register will get a FREE white cotton Yogi Kuti yoga blanket.
