Yoga for Healthy Aging

As we age, it is important for the body mind to move and stay active. Older adults may be more prone to pain or injury. Limitations or injury may make it necessary to work more slowly and intentionally in your practice. This class will focus on stability and balance while also working to create mobility by addressing general stiffness. The poses will be taught in stages and appropriate support and modifications will be given.

Focused Care: Neck and Shoulders

Got tech neck? Brain fog? Did you know that forward head position due to work environment and mental concentration can contribute to increasing the load of stress on the neck and shoulder?

When the head is properly aligned, the weight of the head is properly distributed on the cervical spine. Slumped posture can negatively affect walking, balance, can lead to restricted breathing, and a decline in memory. Forward head position can also reduce the rate at which a person can perform mental tasks involving physical movement such as writing or typing and their reaction speed to sensory stimuli.

This class series will focus on practical methods for reducing tension, alleviating stiffness, and minimizing the effects of stress in the neck and shoulders.

Foundations of Iyengar Yoga

In this class, we'll focus on mastering the basics. This methodical approach will build progressively each week. We'll break each pose down into its foundational elements so that we can learn strength, balance, flexibility, and cultivate awareness. We'll use props to support proper alignment. Foundational poses which include standing, seated, forward bends, twists, and some backbends, are key to unlocking more advanced poses. These poses will help strengthen the core, shoulders, and neck in preparation for inversions. This series is aimed towards beginning practitioners but it is open to all, including those new to Iyengar Yoga. Due to the progressive nature of learning, participants are encouraged to sign-up for the whole series, but drop-ins are permitted.

Opening the Heartspace: Backbends with Nicky Fonte

“Backbends naturally lead to the real aspects of life and the higher aspects of yoga”. BKS Iyengar, Astadala Yogamala

Backbends or backward extensions (Purva Pratana Sthiti, in Sanskrit) keep the body both vigorous and supple and make the mind alert, spirited and light. They also uplift us creating joy, grace and vitality in body, mind and spirit.

Join Nicky Fonte in this 2 hour workshop, where we will work progressively from supported towards unsupported backbends. Poses that open the shoulders, chest and frontal hips create the necessary foundation for understanding how all backbends are accessed. As we approach the more vigorously intense backbends (such as Urdhva Dhanurasana and Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana), we will look at how to maintain a balanced “zeal” with equanimity and poise while fostering positivity throughout.

Open to those who love backbends - and to those who might fear them, learn to effectively overcome those obstacles! The ability to perform the final (classic) asanas is not required as modifications will be shown. Come and open the doorway to your spiritual heart!
